What is a gift card?

A gift card is a prepaid card that is loaded with a specific amount of money to be used for purchasing goods and services. They are most often found at stores or online platforms. The cards can be physical or digital in nature, and can be open-loop or closed-loop.

Closed-loop gift cards are typically only good for purchases at a single store, while open-loop gift cards can be used for purchases anywhere that the card’s issuer accepts payments. Some online retailers may even allow users to redeem their gift cards for cryptocurrency.

One of the best things about gift cards is that they can take some of the guesswork out of choosing a present for someone. They also make a great option for people who don’t know the recipient well enough to purchase them something specific. Plus, they can be redeemed for cash or cryptocurrency when they’re no longer in use.

How do I sell a gift card?

The holiday season is a great time to sell gift cards. Maybe you got a gift card from your boss that you don’t use, or someone gave you a gift card to a restaurant that you never eat at. Instead of letting those gift cards sit in a drawer, you can sell them for cash on the internet.

There are a few gift card resale sites, such as ClipKard and Gameflip, that pay you for gift cards. You share the card’s number and PIN, and they verify its value with the retailer. Then you can accept or reject the offer, and get your money within 48 hours.

Alternatively, you can sell your gift card at one of Coinstar’s exchange kiosks, where they give you cash for the value of the card. But be careful of scams online, and make sure you meet your buyer in person for safety. Another option is to sell your gift cards directly to a friend.

How do I accept a gift card?

A gift card system offers businesses a number of benefits. It generates brand awareness, increases customer loyalty, eliminates cash back on returns, and reduces credit card processing fees. To ensure a successful program, select a solution that prioritizes functionality, security and scalability.

Integrate gift card software with your point-of-sale (POS) system and website. This allows for seamless redemption and balance verification for both in-person and online purchases. Educate your staff. Make sure employees are familiar with how to sell, redeem and check gift card balances.

Know your state laws. Some states require stores and restaurants to give cash back when a gift card’s balance drops below a minimum threshold. The National Conference of State Legislatures maintains a list of state laws on its website. In the event of a retailer’s bankruptcy, unused gift cards may be subject to escheatment, a process in which unclaimed property — in this case, the value of a gifted card — is transferred to the state.

How do I track a gift card?

In your online Square Dashboard, you can view the status of all gift cards that have been sold or redeemed by using our Gift Card Overview page. You can filter for specific information, such as the PAN suffix, initial load date or last loaded date, and the balance.

Many popular gift cards have a website or phone number on the back where you can check the balance. Some have 2 numbers, one for customer service and one to find out the balance.

With the app, you can track redeemed gift cards and who accepted/redeemed them (it’s up to you whether to enable individual staff or locations to have access to this data). The Gift Card Summary and Gift Card Log pages in your app provide more detailed information.

The sale of a gift card is recorded as a separate transaction from your product sales. You can also see the total amount loaded onto a gift card in your Reports page of your online Dashboard, under Gift Card.
